to
encourage the breeding, improvement and welfare of purebred
registered dogs,
-
to hold
championship and other shows and competitions,
-
to
cooperate and affiliate with the Canadian Kennel Club and
any other association or club having objectives similar to
those of the Club.
Perpetual
Trophies and Awards
The Club
offers the following perpetual trophies and awards for annual
competition:
The
J.F.O. Wood Perpetual Challenge Trophy
Awarded for
Best Puppy in Show on the Friday of the championship shows.
Mr. & Mrs.
Wood bred American Cocker Spaniels in Victoria; their
Quandalla Kennels was active in the 1940’s and early 1950’s.
Mrs. Wood donated the trophy following her husband’s death.
The Robert
J. Avery, DVM, Memorial Trophy
Awarded for
Best in Show on the Saturday of the championship shows.
Dr. Avery
and his wife Sally moved to Victoria in the late 1970’s, from
Ottawa where they had been active in the Ottawa Kennel Club.
Dr. Avery worked tirelessly for the VCKC during the 1980’s; he
and Sally spearheaded the drive for the major show to
celebrate the club’s centennial in 1988, for which he served
as Show Superintendent. Following his untimely death in 1989,
the Club offered the trophy in recognition of his
contributions.
The Rudy
Collins Carnation Dog Food Trophy
Awarded for
Best Puppy in Show on the Saturday of the championship shows.
Rudy
Collins, husband of Marlene Collins, was a representative of
the Carnation Dog Food Company which fed and supported the dog
show. Carnation was approached to sponsor a trophy which
bears Mr. Collins' name to acknowledge his long-time support
of the club.
The Marlene
Collins Memorial Trophy
Awarded for
Best Bred by Exhibitor in Show on the Saturday of the
championship shows.
Marlene
Collins served the VCKC in many ways, including several years
as President in the late 1990’s and over the turn of the new
century. She was a successful breeder of Pembroke Welsh
Corgis under the Scotmorn prefix. Following Marlene’s death,
the Club decided to create an award for Best Bred by Exhibitor
in Show in recognition of her particular interest in this
field.
The Major
A.E.A. Smart, MBE, CD Memorial Trophy
Awarded for
Best Puppy in Show on the Sunday of the championship shows.
Major Smart
served as President of the Club from 1961 to 1965, and held
that office when his death occurred while on holiday in
England. Major Smart and his wife Dorothy bred Miniature
Poodles under the Mirdinon prefix.
The Terry
Fisher Memorial Award
Awarded
each day for Best in Show if the winning dog is owner
handled.
The award
is offered in memory of Kathryn (Terry) Fisher who encouraged,
taught and inspired confidence in owners to handle their own
dogs.
The Harry
Dodds Trophy
Awarded for
Best in Match at the annual winter sanction match.
Harry Dodds
emigrated from England shortly before World War I. He and his
brother Joe were North Country men, raised with horses and
dogs, and were of the old breed of Terrier fanciers with an
unparalleled eye for type and conformation. Both became
all-breed judges. Joe made his home in Vancouver, where he
became well known for his Tynedale Wire Fox Terriers, while
Harry came to Victoria and soon became active in the VCKC, an
interest he maintained for the rest of his long life. He was
fond of claiming that he had been Show Superintendent for
forty years! Interested in all dogs, horses and other
livestock, his particular breeds were Wire Fox Terriers and
Scottish Terriers under the Strathmore prefix.
